The ideal general purpose industrial thin bond tape for a wide range of substrates and applications, from displays to signage to metal fabrication to trim attachment.
Thin bonding lets your design shine without bulky fasteners by using a virtually invisible industrial-strength bond to attach materials. Using a tape rather than a liquid adhesive allows you to customize the tape to the precise shape you need for the final design, as well as giving you production flexibility by leaving the liner in place until the second substrate is ready. Double coated or adhesive transfer tapes provide shear strength, conformability and high initial adhesion and have industrial applications in electronics, auto interiors, signage and graphics, sporting equipment and much more.
Visit our Double Sided Tapes page to learn more about the benefits common to all double sided tapes.
The carrier is the material that holds or “carries” the adhesive; in double coated tapes (also called supported tapes) it separates the two adhesives. The carrier can be made of paper, plastic film, tissue or foam, and the type of carrier can be important for applications that need to withstand, as one example, the heat level of a paint-drying process or medical sterilization. Having a carrier in the middle enables two different adhesives to be applied for adhering dissimilar materials that require different bonding properties. Once the adhesive is applied to the carrier a liner is applied over one or both sides to protect the adhesive until the tape is applied.
There is also a class of double sided tapes with no carrier. Adhesive Transfer Tape (sometimes called ATT, transfer tape or unsupported tape) is composed of a thin film of adhesive with a liner over the top so it can be easily handled. As with other double sided tapes, an adhesive transfer tape is applied, then the liner is peeled off to apply the second substrate. With no carrier for separation these thin bonding tapes consist of one type of adhesive, but their overall temperature resistance is not limited by the temperature resistance of the carrier and they are extremely conformable to irregular surfaces.
From climate-controlled offices to harsh outdoor environments, you need high-performance versatility that can withstand whatever conditions customers throw at your products. Whether you’re bonding high surface energy substrates like metals and glass or difficult low surface energy materials like powder-coats and some composites, 3M has a wide variety of durable options for thin bonding – select each tab to learn more.
Tape for Extreme Situations
When extreme environments make performance mission critical, look to 3M™ 100MP High Performance Acrylic Adhesive. Designed for operating temperatures up to 300°F (149°C) with short-term temperature tolerance up to 500°F (260°C), this tape also performs in extreme cold and situations where temperatures cycle between extremes. This durable adhesive is also resistant to chemicals, UV and solvents and provides a high-strength adhesive with a thin profile. It stands up to use in extreme performance applications such as aerospace de-icing boots and lightning protection systems, disc brake shims, high-temperature/high-pressure autoclaves, air bag inflator burst discs, engine and transmission control modules, metal bonding and cladding, high-temperature graphics and labels, kickplates and more.
This adhesive is designed for use with high and medium surface energy materials such as metals, polyimides and polycarbonate.
Tape for Metal and High Surface Energy Substrates
It’s not just your substrates that have to endure heat and repeated use – so does the adhesive. 3M™ Acrylic Adhesive 200MP is a versatile adhesive with excellent shear and peel strength, anti-liting power and resistance to solvents and heat. It stands up to repeated use in applications such as consumer appliances, industrial machinery, automotive, transportation, consumer electronics, healthcare, hospitals, public space communications, graphic overlays and fitness machines. This adhesive bonds a variety of metals and other high surface energy substrates, including:
Tape for Hard-to-Bond Textures
When you need a durable solution that can attach, seal and reduce noise, even with hard-to-bond textures, look to 3M™ Acrylic Adhesive 300MP. This versatile high-performance adhesive brings high initial tack and ease of die-cutting to double-coated tapes for a variety of markets including general industrial, automotive, marine, medical equipment, specialty vehicle, construction finishing and office workspace applications. This adhesive bonds textures and substrates such as:
Tape for Hard-to-Bond Surfaces
Some substrates are just challenging to wet out and stick to, period. 3M™ High-Strength Acrylic Adhesive 300LSE is designed specifically to bond low surface energy substrates securely and reliably with high initial tack and high shear strength in the automotive, electronics, consumer appliance and other industries. The adhesive demonstrates good anti-lifting properties on both flat and curved surfaces made of:
Impact- and Chemical-Resistant Tapes
From drops and falls to sweat and sunscreen during a full workout, electronics end up in situations where neat and tidy aren’t part of the picture. 3M has tapes designed just for environments where impact and chemical resistance are important to customer satisfaction with your product.
As they say, it isn’t the fall, it’s the sudden stop at the end. Drops, vibration and other impacts do happen, and your displays, housings and components need to withstand them. 3M™ Impact Resistant Tape delivers superior impact and vibration damping along with shear resistance, high peel adhesion and high bonding strength. These tapes are designed to provide good bonding on a wide variety of substrates, including those used in electronics and components such as:
Workouts aren’t just tough on the individual, they’re tough on your electronics those individuals wear. 3M™ Chemical-Resistant Adhesive Transfer Tape 96105CR is chemical-resistant and reliable, designed to stand up to heat, humidity, sweat, corrosion, skin oils, sunscreen and more to keep up with your devices and their wearers. You may be able to use tape straight from the roll, but many applications require bonds to be a specific size and shape. A converter will work with you to determine the specific carrier and adhesive for the job, then customize 3M products to the precise format you need for your application. Converted tapes can be supplied as rolls or sheets and can be configured for machine or manual application.
